![]() The possibilities of networked collaboration, building on web-driven dynamic databases and on encoding standards, have shifted the editorial model decisively towards editing as a partnership of many, and towards editions as open-ended, ever-changing constructs. Even more than most humanities scholarship, textual scholarship has been historically the preserve of the lone scholar, spending long years in solitary contemplation of the many versions of a single work before he (usually, as female scholars have been rare among textual scholars) passes a fixed print edition out to the world. ![]() But in the ten years which have passed since the initial design of Anastasia, much has changed: in standards in software, hardware and network technologies but most of all, in the reshaping of the discipline of scholarly editing through the impact of digital methods. In terms of its avowed aims, Anastasia was successful: we were able to make several editions we could not have made otherwise. ![]() The Anastasia publishing system was developed from 1998 on to enable creation of complex scholarly editions in digital form, with the specific brief of supplying the deficiencies in the only system available up to that time, DynaText.
